Progress Test in English (PTE) is a standardised assessment of pupils’ technical English skills (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and reading comprehension. This is designed for use year on year to support teachers in benchmarking student’s English knowledge, and measure their progress over time. This can help in identifying those in need of extra help, as well as those who are particularly able.

Providing seamless assessment between ages 5-14, PTE includes a brand new transition test (Level 11T). Designed specifically for use at the beginning of Year 7, it provides an accurate baseline from which progress in secondary school can be monitored – a key requirement of Ofsted. For pupils who have already been tested at the end of Year 6, it enables schools to re-assess on entry to secondary with new content.
To measure each pupil's writing progress, a separate photocopiable resource is also available.
PTE has become the standardised English assessment of choice in many schools. The new edition respects the legacy of its predecessor (the widely used and trusted Progress in English, PiE) while providing brand new content relevant to UK Curricula, including the new English national curriculum and a new standardisation based on around 35,000 pupils.
PTE is part of the Progress Test Series along with maths and science and is an ideal assessment for reliable progress tracking and national benchmarking with new content to match the new National Curriculum.
